This plant would be more believable in a Flemish still life than in the garden. The flowers offer a long-lasting show in absolutely magnificent shades of smoky lavender washed with streaks of vivid lipstick red. The silvery gray foliage both complements and contrasts with the flowers. Makes a marvelous border plant given full sun and well-drained soil.
Unlike biennial D. barbatus, this introduction is perennial, giving seasons of garden pleasure for at least 15 years (we'll let you know how much longer it lasts as the years pass...). Blooms for months with rounded deep scarlet-red flower heads on stiff stems above glossy green strap-like foliage. Carefree in full sun and ordinary garden soil.
Another fine Fleming Brothers creation. Spicy-scented, dark rose colored flower with petal edges laced in white. Compact habit and gray-green foliage adds to the excitement of this variety. Superb for a front planting in the perennial border at only 10" tall. An excellent "old-time" variety for the modern garden.
