Matteuccia struthiopteris $12.95
Ostrich Fern
Our selection is originally from Judith-Jones, who considers this the Asiatic counterpart of the cultivated native species. Produces green, feathery dissected fronds to 5 feet, and handsome fertile leaves that mature from shiny bronze to brown by winter. Remaining erect after the sterile leaves have died back for the season, they are highly coveted for use in our holiday wreaths.
Adiantum pedatum $12.95
American Maidenhair
We consider this the daintiest of all native ferns and a must for every collection. A bit of a chameleon, its early rising crosiers are earth colored, still hidden to all but the keen observer. Petioles then quickly rise, turn a light mid-green, and unfold into flat, fan-like fronds. Attractive from early spring into fall in moist sites.
Cyrtomium fortunei $9.25
Holly Fern
A superb evergreen Asian species, long cultivated in bright windows as a pot plant in colder climates. In climates that can accommodate it, it thrives in a semi-shaded site in evenly moist soil, presenting pale green leathery sickle-shaped leaflets (pinnae) along stems rising to 2 ft. In regard to textural qualities and long life, Cyrtomium is simply top-notch and should be encountered more often than it is.
A volunteer at the New England Wildflower Society discovered this new fern that is all the rage. Lacy green foliage is held high above blood-red stems for a fresh look in the shaded garden. Tough as nails and easy to grow, is an excellent choice for perennial borders, woodland gardens, or slightly drier locations other ferns won't establish. Prefers moist, humusy soil for outstanding growth. Loves container culture.
Blechnum spicant $12.95
Deer Fern
A tough-as-nails species with leathery, glossy green foliage that stands up marvelously beside the more delicate deciduous ferns of our woodland. Ladder shaped fronds form a basal rosette from which the newest fronds shoot straight up to form a central vertical grouping. Tolerant of dry soil and a choice fern for tucking into crevices, around fallen logs or in any setting with a bit of shade and little moisture.
