No hardy plant species can compete with the outrageous textural qualities of the giant-leaved Gunnera. Fantastical stands of gigantic leaves, often to 6 ft. across or more, are carried on prickly stems, while curious cone-shaped flower heads extend to 3 ft. or taller. For mild summer-cool areas, in sun or partial shade and moist soil. Protect the crown in winter.
Observed this as a diminutive and polite plant in dry shade in Chile, from where we collected this offering. A female clone of a dioecious species, it displays relatively small foliage when compared to the diversity of forms found within its natural populations. Glossy rounded leaves to 3" form rather quickly spreading mats, while the erect racemes, to 4", will result in fruit when paired with the proper partner.
