This is the loveliest of all deciduous grasses. The richly golden variegated foliage forms mounds of leaves that tend to flow in the same direction, creating a waterfall effect. It acquires nice reddish tints that persist into winter when grown in full sun; in shaded sites it inclines to a stunning lime-gold.
Come fall this beauty, known as "Red Wind" in Japan, gives our favorite H. 'Aureola' a run for its money. Most of the ribbon-like strap leaves turn a striking red, combining with the remaining chartreuse green leaves for a bold combination. It's just the thing to punctuate a shady border or mass along a pond to reflect the trees' autumn tints.
