A striking collection from Western Japan. Lanceolate leaflets are bright, shiny green and topped by scintillating purple and white striped spathe. Grows in the hills surrounding the famous Shinto Temple on Miyajima Island.
A magnificently larger form of the species, with bronze stems mottled and speckled with luminous lime green, and large palmate leaves. Widely hooded spathes are a rich wine with thin white striples. Moist, well drained soil in light shade.
A trifoliolate species with deeply corrugated leaves, often with a bizarrely beautiful green metallic sheen. The flowers are amongst the most amazingly animated of the genus, with a white and purple striped, cobrahead-like spathe with auricles on each side, produced near ground level completely hiding the spadix inside. Truly amazing.
Mixed accessions from the Western Hills above Kunming in Yunnan Province, this population had many divided leaflets with long drip tips (variable length among seedlings) atop stems to 3 ft., though in our woodland, our mature plants rise to nearly 6 ft. in height. The purplish striped flower arises from the leaf petiole just under the foliage, with a short, green spadix and a pendulous spathe with a long, acuminate tip.
This æJack-in-the-PulpitÆ species I collected in Yunnan Province in 1996 has proven to be a striking addition to our late spring woodland garden, with elegant whorls of foliage atop stems to 2.5 ft. and handsome purple and white hoods emerging from mottled stems beneath. Hardy, easy to cultivate and long lived.
This rare, durable, easily grown Taiwanese species is spectacular. A large whorl of long, narrow leaves with an extended drip tip appears atop sensational purple mottled stems. Dark hooded spathes enclose a white stubby spadix, followed by enormous heads of red fruit that ripen near ground level.
