Though one might assume this to be a dwarf version of the Plume Cryptomeria, indeed it possesses mostly adult foliage, providing a very distinctive texture, ultimately producing a very dense and dwarf shrublet to 3 ft. by 3 ft., in full sun and any well-drained soil. Another treasure that we originally received from J.C. Raulston.
Jeweled Dragon Cryptomeria. Unique, broadly spreading shrub to 15 ft. in 10 years, with tufts of dense foliage developing along stems late in the season after an initial burst of elongated ônormalö foliage; providing a very unusual effect and a very beautiful specimen in a relatively short period of time. Ideal for a non-formal, quick-to-establish, low maintenance hedge, in full sun or very light shade.
This is our first offering of this very good, dwarf cultivar of Cryptomeria that I was given by J.C. Raulston over 15 years ago. That it has taken this long to at last take cuttings provides a glimpse into its rate of growth, slowly but steadily developing into a dense globe-shaped specimen to 2.5 ft. x 2.5 ft. In addition to its well-behaved stature, the foliage of Birodo transitions in cooler temperatures to a purple russet color, adding a rich flavor to the winter landscape in our garden. Best in full sun and any draining soil.
A very curious but handsome, dwarf, rounded selection of this species with incredibly dense, dark green, glossy foliage picking up some winter hints of russet, for full-sun conditions in the rockery or foundation. 18ö by 18ö in 10 years.
