A lovely selection from a favorite species of mine, with light lavender flowers produced atop 2 ft. stems in mid-spring to early summer, and, if cut hard after flowering, again in mid- to late summer. Full sun, and soil with adequate summer moisture.
Hydrangea macrophylla 'Ayesha' (H) $12.95
Big Leaf Hydrangea
[Hydrangea macrophylla 'Ayesha']This is the only Hydrangea common in cultivation to have globular flowers whose sterile florets have sepals in the shape of tiny spoons, similar in appearance to the rounded, waxy blossoms of lilacs. With pale pink to light blue coloration depending on soil pH, this selection also offers a slight fragrance, rare among the hortensia hydrangeas. Learm More about Heronswood Hydrangeas, their care and pruning Ships in a 4" inch container. Approx. 3 1/4" x 4 1/4" x 3 7/8" (25.8 cu. In. soil volume).
My collections of this species from Taehuksan Island in S. Korea in 1993, this forms handsome mounds of linear ovate leaves to 1 ft. in length, while the lavender (and rarely white) flowers are borne towards the top of the scapes, rising to 1 ft. or more. This grew in open sunny sites as well as rather dryish shade, though seems to have settled in nicely in the humus-rich shaded soil of our woodland.
Hydrangea macrophylla 'Frillibet' (H) $12.95
Big Leaf Hydrangea
[Hydrangea macrophylla 'Frillibet']A compact deciduous hydrangea to 4 ft., topped in mid-summer with relatively large, frilly-edged mopheads of rosy pink in alkaline soil, or blue to blue white in acidic soil. An extremely lovely hydrangea species for the brighter woodland in humus-rich, moisture retentive soil. Learm More about Heronswood Hydrangeas, their care and pruning Ships in a 4" inch container. Approx. 3 1/4" x 4 1/4" x 3 7/8" (25.8 cu. In. soil volume).
Geranium pratense 'Striatum' $11.95
Hardy Geranium
A vigorous, upright clone with handsome divided leaves and curiously variegated flowers of basically white striated with blue lavender, in various degrees and patterns, demanding a second take by numerous visitors to the garden while this is in blossom in June and July. To 18 in., in full sun and any well-drained soil. Sometimes sold as 'Splish-splash'.
