The foliage of this ever-changing beauty emerges in tones of brilliant shrimp pink, later fading to pink-suffused chartreuse and, later still, to deeper green. One of the finest foliage displays in the spring garden, it grows into a dense, rounded specimen, ideally suited to the smaller garden. Prefers full sun and a well-drained soil.

Paperbark Maple
A lovely choice for year-round interest. The opposite, trifoliate leaves have a deep green top and a shimmering silver underside well into late summer, they then slowly turn a brilliant, burnt orange-red fall color that persists into winter. The truly magnificent show, however, is from the curling, cinnamon-colored bark. Reminiscent of the madronna trees in the Northeast but without the brittle nature, birds flock to the trunks and perch themselves precariously on the peeled back bark.

These are seedlings from our trees, that we raised from seed collected in Antrim County, Michigan in 1987.

Very unlike what I consider the typical A. davidii in cultivation, the leaves of these individuals were extremely large, to 6", deep green, rounded and unlobed and possessing a leathery texture. The bark of this species offers a delicious striation of green and white which is best preserved by planting in areas of complete to modest shade in any well-drained soil. Ultimately to 35 f
