That old standby Norwegian insult, "Du er en struts" (You are an ostrich), has helped me remember the name of this remarkable deciduous fern that thrives in the woodland gardens at Heronswood. Produces green, frilly, leathery fronds to 4 ft., and handsome fertile fronds that are highly coveted here for use in our holiday wreaths. Decidedly stoloniferous. I just hate it when I am called an ostrich.
