Thuja plicata 'Holly Turner' $16.95
Gian Arborvitae
This cultivar was found on Whidbey Island, Washington, where it produced a wide, spreading specimen that tried desperately to muster a leader, but opted in the end to produce only additional lateral branches that wept gracefully downward. Brought to us years ago by Dana Moffett, we have offered it in the past under the name of T. occidentalis Prostrate Form. Now verified to be T. plicata, we have named this in memory of a superb gardener, plantswoman and friend, Holly Turner of Whidbey Island.
This is a distinctive clone of Sea Kale that we have grown and appreciated for many years. It creates early spring clumps of succulent purple-suffused foliage with blue-gray overtones and early spring sprays of fragrant white flowers rising to 2 feet. For full sun and very well-drained positions in the front to mid-border position.
Cyrtomium fortunei $9.25
Holly Fern
A superb evergreen Asian species, long cultivated in bright windows as a pot plant in colder climates. In climates that can accommodate it, it thrives in a semi-shaded site in evenly moist soil, presenting pale green leathery sickle-shaped leaflets (pinnae) along stems rising to 2 ft. In regard to textural qualities and long life, Cyrtomium is simply top-notch and should be encountered more often than it is.
Ilex crenata 'Ivory Tower' $12.95
Upright Holly
An upright form of this durable evergreen species with finely textured glossy green foliage along stems to 4 ft. while the small white flowers in spring result in crops of white rather than the normal black fruit. As with all hollies, this is dioecious and a male of this or a closely related species must be lurking close by for substantial fruit set. Very pretty in our light woodland garden arising from a sweep of Euphorbia amygdaloides var. robbiae.
This muted pewter-foliaged selection is wonderful, I think, for combining with other variegated plants in the woodland or sunny border alike, or as a reflective component in a sea of green. Stiffly upright growth possessing a bit of asocial behavior, responds to shearing, if you desire a more fully cloaked specimen. Ultimately to 8 ft.
Ilex crenata 'Sky Pencil' $8.95
japanese Holly
A very striking, exceedingly narrow female form of the Japanese Holly, which grows as a tall, very narrow column to 6 ft. but not exceeding 10ö in width. Perfect as a vertical accent in the mixed border, a very narrow hedge or a corner planting with little room to maneuver.
